Few hours ago we informed that Dell expanded its Ubuntu offering. They introduced a brand new Inspiron version, coded 1420 N. Unlike previously, this time we can make exact price comparison with a Windows-based model (Inspiron 1420). De-select a custom color of the Windows notebook (and save $20) and the only difference will be an operating system. Ubuntu ($774) vs. Windows Vista Home Basic Edition (the most crippled version, $799). So it looks like Home Basic costs Dell $25 + what_it_gets_from_software_vendors_for_installing_their_crapware.
Windows-based dell is exactly $25 more expensive

Don't forget to get your cd buring software, virus protection, malware protection, Office suite, zip utilities and to defrag often. Sorry, with this version of Windows you can't VPN into your work and Microsoft doesn't want you to using visualization because it violates DRM.
you can always just download warez and hide in a dark cave I guess.

Not completely fair... There are perfectly free alternatives for CD burning software, virus protection (Avast! for example), mailware protection, Office suite (OpenOffice.org is also available for Windows) and zip utilities (7zip).
There are probably also free software solutions for VPN networking (or maybe your router already has VPN capabilities?) And I don't think using visualization to run Linux for example will violate MS' DRM...
You're right on the defragging part though.
